Central America and the Caribbean together form one of the most vibrant and diverse corners of the Americas. The isthmus — a slender bridge of land stretching from Belize and Guatemala down to Panama — connects North America to South America and separates the Pacific from the Caribbean Sea. Just seven countries fit into this narrow strip, yet the landscape ranges from cloud forests and active volcanoes to coral reefs and mangrove coastlines.
Scattered across the turquoise waters of the Caribbean lie thirteen independent island nations, from Cuba — the largest — to tiny Saint Kitts and Nevis, the smallest sovereign state in the Americas. Centuries of colonial history have left a rich cultural mosaic: Spanish, English, French and Dutch are all official languages somewhere in the region, and African, Indigenous and European traditions blend into unique local identities. The Caribbean also gave the world calypso, reggae, rum and some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet.
Whether you dream of diving in Belize's Blue Hole, hiking Guatemala's Mayan ruins, or soaking up Havana's fading glamour, knowing where each country sits on the map is the first step toward understanding this fascinating crossroads between continents and oceans.
